VoLTE and Beyond

Now that VoLTE is launched, leading operators are moving into the next phase of network evolution which will profoundly transform network technology, services and user experience. As with any technology transition cycle, there comes a stage when the questions shift from feasibility or rationale to the next steps, seeking a path to exploit its advancement. This is where Mavenir provides its true differentiation since it has always envisioned VoLTE as a platform that will shake up industry dynamics in profound ways. Mavenir believes that VoLTE is not only a competitive necessity but also an opportunity for operators to fully transform their networks, service offering and business models in order to sustain and evolve their presence as primary communication service providers.

The transformation is about moving beyond just providing plain voice and messaging services to the next generation of contextual, multidimensional communications ecosystem.

The baseline VoLTE not only provides the spectral efficiency and faster call setup, it also enables all-IP architecture. Operators can expedite the transition to a single IP domain by retiring the CS core with IMS Centralized Services (ICS) gateway. Having all-IP architecture allows decoupling of service layer from the underlying network access technology. Its benefit is more evident when the same IMS application servers are reused to extend the operator’s voice and messaging services to the Wi-Fi domain with secure access and seamless mobility. Operators can truly have untethered access to their communication services by offering multi-device access with OTT clients for tablets and other personal devices. These network changes enhance operator services' reach on par with the OTT applications while providing better user experience on mobile devices with guaranteed QoS and Wi-Fi seamless mobility.

Once the network infrastructure is upgraded for VoLTE, operators can focus on value-added services and innovative offers to create new revenue streams. Features like HD video and native RCS services will bring improved user experiences. Additionally, with WebRTC, operators can build a developer community around a popular and more engaging technology. Using VoLTE and RCS foundation, operators can also have their own unique services. Innovative solutions like multi-line services with custom business solutions or shared family line features will create adjacent enterprise and residential market opportunities.
